Kansai Rainbow Parade 2010

So not much as been going on in the Shuwa world for me right now. Sarah and I are still trying to find a time to get together and take "How-to" pictures for a lot of the signs.

But over the weekend we went to the Kansai Rainbow Parade in Osaka. It was pretty awesome!!! And there under that little bridge that hide us from the down poor, along with all the men dressed in leather and speedos, a guy in a cute bear suit, and a certain Takurazuka looking man was a lady signing! It was so cool to see real Shuwa in action. And we, aka Sarah and I, could understand a lot of what she said. We understood more of her than we did of the people speaking Japanese who she was translating for.

I think I got a short video of her signing, if so I'll try and get it up here sooner or later.

That's really about it for now. I wanna try and get some pictures up here soon too of some basic greetings and introduction type things.

Welcome to 耳がない生活.

If you've found this blog you either have a very unique interests or you know me and I sent you the link.

Let me explain what this blog is about really fast.
耳がない生活 means "Life without Eyes". It is referring deaf people and is in Japanese because that is the language for where I am right now, plus more.
If this has caught your interest please keep reading, I'm sure you might get more interested as I update more.

Anyways, I decided to make this blog about 手話(しゅわ/Shuwa), or Japanese Sign Language(JSL). I've never before had much interest in Sign Languages before, in elementary school I learned how to Sign my name and that is about the only background I had of any Sign Language before three weeks ago.

One of the classes I'm taking here at Kansai Gaidai is called "The Body and Communication in Japan". The class is all about gesture and body language in Japanese society. From the first class the professor started teaching some Shuwa. Last Wednesday was also the first meeting for the JSL club. I'm not sure what it is at all that has hooked me on Shuwa, but I've started to feel a real passion for it developing.

In light of that I wanted to start a blog about my experiences learning Shuwa and maybe put some lessons/tips up too, for those interested. But pretty much this is going to be a project for me to keep track of what I'm learning. An example of what I want to do is post pictures and videos of myself Signing.

So if I've gotten your interest or you're interested in also learning more about Shuwa, stick around! I'm sure watching me trying to Sign will be more than entertaining!
